How to Rank in ChatGPT and AI Search
Steve Burk Co-Founder 7 min read
Ranking in ChatGPT means being the business it names or cites when someone asks about your service. ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews tend to pull from pages that answer a single question directly, business facts that match across the web, reviews, and mentions on other sites. For local and B2B service businesses, the work is good SEO, written clearly.
If you have asked ChatGPT to recommend a company like yours and watched it name a competitor, you are not alone. There is no form to submit. The answer is built from what the web already says about you, so the job is making sure the web says it clearly and consistently. It is the same approach behind our SEO services.
How ChatGPT and AI Overviews decide which businesses to name
When someone asks ChatGPT for the best roofer in Morris County, or a payroll firm for a 40-person company, it builds the answer from what the model learned in training and, often, from a live web search. Google's AI Overviews work from Google's own index, so they tend to cite pages that already rank well.
Either way, the tool wants sources it can quote with confidence. In our experience, 5 things decide whether that source is you:
- Pages that answer a single question directly in the first sentence or 2.
- Business facts (name, address, hours and services) that match on your website, your Google Business Profile and your directory listings.
- Reviews and mentions on other sites, which show that real customers and real publications know you.
- Structured data, which is code that labels your business details so software does not have to guess.
- A clear about page that says who you are, where you work and who you serve.
The common thread is certainty. If your website says you serve 3 counties, your profile says 1 and a directory still shows an old address, the safer move for the tool is to name someone else. The same goes for sites that load slowly or block crawlers. We go deeper on this in our post on technical SEO for business owners.
How to rank in ChatGPT: start with your own pages
Most service business websites were written to impress, not to answer. Nothing on them says what a job costs, how long it takes or what happens after someone fills out the form. Those are the questions people ask AI tools, so those pages come first.
Open every page with a direct answer
Write the first 1 or 2 sentences of each page as if they were the whole answer. A kitchen remodel page should open with the typical price range in your area, the timeline and who the service suits. The opening is the part that gets quoted.
Add a short FAQ section to key pages
Collect the questions customers ask before they hire you and answer 3 to 5 of them at the bottom of each service page, 1 short paragraph each. Customers type these questions into ChatGPT almost word for word.
State price ranges and your process
Owners leave prices off because every job is different. Buyers still want a range, and so do AI tools. Give a low and a high figure, say what pushes a job toward the top, then lay out your process in plain steps.
Publish a clear about page and add structured data
State your business name, the year you started, the towns or industries you serve and who runs the company. Then have your developer add structured data (often called schema markup) for your business and your services. It does not guarantee a mention. It removes guesswork.
None of this needs a separate AI budget. It is page-by-page work that a solid SEO program should already include. This ties directly into how much SEO costs in New Jersey, which we cover in a separate post.
How to show up in AI Overviews and local AI answers
Your website is only 1 source. For questions like "best HVAC company near me," AI Overviews and ChatGPT tend to lean on business listings, reviews and what other sites say about you. In our experience, a strong page with a weak outside footprint usually loses to a decent page with a strong one. The outside work comes down to 4 habits:
- Keep your name, address and services identical on your Google Business Profile, your website and every directory listing.
- Ask every happy customer for a review and reply to each one, since reviews that describe the job and the town say far more than a star rating.
- Earn mentions on local news sites, chamber and association pages, and industry publications.
- Keep your profile current with recent photos, hours and service updates.
For a builder or contractor, buyers ask what a custom home costs per square foot, how long permits take and whether the company handles design. The outside signals are specific too: a builders association listing, a town paper feature on a finished home, and reviews that name the town. For industry-specific detail, see our page on SEO built for construction companies.
What does not work for ranking in ChatGPT
Every time search changes, a wave of shortcuts follows. Most are old tricks with a new label, and they tend to backfire:
- Keyword stuffing, such as repeating "best roofer in Morristown" 20 times, which makes a page harder to quote, not easier.
- Fake or paid reviews, which break platform rules and can get reviews removed or your profile restricted.
- Hidden text or instructions written for AI tools to read, a form of spam Google has penalized for years.
- Hundreds of thin pages that swap 1 town name for another, which rarely get cited.
- Anyone who guarantees placement in ChatGPT, since no marketer controls those answers.
The honest route is slower. Clear pages, consistent facts and real reviews take months to build, but they keep paying off.
How to check if your business shows up in ChatGPT
You do not need special software. You need a list of questions, a spreadsheet and about 1 hour a month.
- Write down 10 to 15 questions your customers actually ask, in their words, such as "who installs heat pumps in Bergen County."
- Once a month, ask each question in ChatGPT and search it on Google, noting whether an AI Overview appears.
- Log whether your business is named, which competitors are named and which sources the answer cites.
- Check every fact stated about you, since wrong hours or old addresses point to the listing that needs fixing.
- Compare month over month, because answers vary from day to day and the trend matters more than any single result.
Run your checks while logged out or in a private window, since answers can shift with location and past conversations. The cited sources column matters most, because it shows which sites the tools trust in your field.

What to expect from ranking in AI search
AI search is an extension of good SEO, not a replacement for it. Some people call this work generative engine optimization. The label is new, but the work is familiar: clear pages, consistent facts, real reviews and a site search engines can read.
Our work with Build Better Live Happier, a custom home builder, shows what clear, consistent content can do. The business reached #1 in the Google Map Pack with $0 in ad spend and has earned more than 8 million organic views. For proof, look at #1 in the Map Pack on zero ad spend.
Set a realistic timeline. Page fixes can be picked up once those pages are crawled again, while reviews and outside mentions build over months. Judge the effort by leads, not by a single screenshot.
The bigger change is in how buyers build a shortlist. More of them ask an AI tool who to consider before they ever fill out a form, and the businesses named are the ones whose facts are easy to find and trust. We have seen this play out firsthand, as our post on how law firms choose a marketing agency explains.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I show up in AI Overviews?
Start by ranking well in regular Google results, since AI Overviews tend to draw from pages Google already trusts. Open each page with a direct answer, add FAQ sections, keep your Google Business Profile complete and consistent with your website, and earn reviews and local mentions. There is no separate form or setting for AI Overviews. The same clear, well-organized pages that win regular rankings are the ones that get cited.
How long does it take to rank in ChatGPT?
It depends on where you start. Fixes to your own pages, such as direct answers and clear pricing, can be picked up once those pages are crawled again. Reviews, directory cleanup and mentions on other sites build over several months. In our experience, businesses should give it 3 to 6 months of steady work and monthly checks before judging results, and should track leads alongside AI mentions.
Is optimizing for ChatGPT different from regular SEO?
Mostly no. ChatGPT and AI Overviews reward the same basics as Google: clear pages, consistent business facts, real reviews and a site that is easy to crawl. The main difference is emphasis. AI answers quote short, direct passages, so page openers and FAQ answers matter more, and mentions on other sites tend to carry more weight because the tool is looking for agreement across sources.
